How to Combat Your Tampon Leaking

By Ruby Moon (she/her) from Team August | 7.13.2022

Menstruation is unfortunately still a stigmatized subject which makes it seem like leaking is the most embarrassing thing in the world.

It’s true, leaks are so not ideal butttt sh%* happens.

You forget to change your tampon, you don’t expect your period, you have irregular periods, you have a little mid-cycle spotting – all normal, natural, and happen to the best of us menstruators!

So, in an attempt to break down the stigma and open up the conversation, here are the answers to some of your most-asked questions about period leaks!

TW: there will be photos of period blood in this article!

Why does my period blood leak to the back?

Think about the anatomy of your vagina and body as you’re lying down.

It’s allllll gravity x physics, baby.

What happens if the blood leaks through the tampon?

Ok first off, leaks are normal. Try not to be too embarrassed.

If blood leaks through your tampon it will likely be absorbed into your underwear, whatever else you're wearing on your bottoms, and worst-case-scenario, maybe a little spot on whatever you're sitting on.

If you haven’t already, we’d recommend trying August tampons which are made with a braided string feature to avoid leakage. Check them out here!

Will my tampon leak while I’m swimming?

Tampons are a great period product to wear while swimming, or spending all day at the beach!

You might have a little leakage because, contrary to myths, your flow does not completely stop in the water – it's reduced, but not stopped.

An August tampon (designed in the shape of angel wings to fit the natural shape of your vagina) is a great way to avoid stains on your bathing suit and a safeguard for when you get out of the water.

Just don't get distracted building sandcastles and remember to change it…

What do I do if I leak through my clothes?

First of all, DON'T PANIC. We challenge you to find a menstruator who hasn't bled through a pair of pants – we've all been there.

  • Step one is to make your way to the nearest bathroom to clean up. If it makes you more comfortable, you could try asking if someone you are with has an extra sweatshirt to tie around your waist for your journey to the bathroom.
  • If you have an emergency August tampon or pad on you – great. If not, hopefully the nearest bathroom does. If all else fails, wrap some toilet paper around your underwear where the blood will fall to act as a temporary stop until you can get to a menstrual product.
  • Clean up and rinse your clothing if need be.
  • If not, no need to fret, periods are completely normal, stand tall and get yourself to the nearest change of clothes ASAP, you got this!!

How to get period blood out of clothes and sheets?

Here are 6 suggestions to get a stain out:

  1. Icy cold water
  2. General stain remover
  3. White vinegar mixed with normal soap or detergent, rubbed with a cold wet towel. Then throw the item into a cold wash cycle!
  4. Squeeze some lemon juice onto the stain and let sit for 5 minutes
  5. A mixture of ⅔ water and ⅓ salt gently scrubbed into the fabric with a wet cloth
  6. Mixed baking soda and cold water gently rubbed in (let it sit for at least 30 minutes then wash it in the washing machine on a cold setting

If I start my period and I don't have access to any menstrual products, what is the best alternate absorption method?

Before trying any make-shift options like cardboard or cloth (these can be super unhygienic!), try some trusted outlets who might also have available period products like:

  • Your school nurse/gym teachers or any other trusted teacher
  • Ask a friend (don't be shy!)
  • Pop into a pharmacy, primary care clinic or gynecologist’s office!

Better yet, NOMINATE YOUR SCHOOL to be stocked August period care so you never have to be worried about a leak again <3

If you’re worried about leaking through generic pads or tampons, here are a few reasons why you should switch to August’s sustainable period products:

  • Firstly, August tampons, pads & liners are made with organic cotton fibers making them free of pesticides, herbicides, fragrances, polyester, rayon, deodorants, dioxins, dyes, and chemicals!
  • August tampons are made with a braided string feature to catch any drips plus they open axially, or like a pair of angel wings, to best fit the natural shape of your vagina for more comfort and absorbency.
  • August’s disposable pads are longer, making them more full-coverage. Plus, they have dense tiny holes in the surface of the pad making them soft, long-lasting, and breathable. And, in addition to the organic cotton, are made with natural biodegradable fluff pulp, and patented Japanese Sumitomo SAP which has an unmatched ability to absorb lock in liquids.
