Is there any way to prevent fainting on my period?

Verified by Dr. Heather Irobunda (she/her), MD, OB/GYN
Our Answer
What our doctors say

First of all, definitely talk to a medical professional and let them know your concerns! Some ways that you can predict that you may faint during your period is if you have been told by a medical provider in the past that you have anemia (which means you have a low red blood cell count). Basically, you are circulating less oxygen in your blood which can make you feel tired and weak, but also can cause you to faint. Also, even if you haven’t seen a doctor in a while, if you notice that your periods are heavy or you have severe cramps, and you tend to feel tired and weak during them, that also puts you at risk for fainting. If your cramps are so severe that they cause you to faint, that is not normal and you should see a doctor ASAP - Just to make sure that you don’t have another underlying issue at play. A suggested treatment would be to increase your iron intake in your diet with green leafy vegetables, quinoa and red meat, or by taking iron supplements.
