Carbon Offsetting & August

What is a Carbon Footprint?

Greenhouse gases are any gases that trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere. While they are key to keeping the Earth warm and inhabitable, the increasing levels of carbon emitted by modern methods of production have had serious environmental repercussions. Measured in weight, any action you take and product you use has a carbon footprint. Carbon goes up into the atmosphere, and travels all over the world which is why reducing our carbon footprint requires global action.

What we do to Reduce our Carbon Footprint

  • Use organic cotton which has a lower carbon footprint than conventional cotton.
  • Only ship full containers of product.
  • Provide a reduced shipping option for subscribers to receive three months of product at one time.
  • Products ship from a local fulfillment center instead of directly from manufacturers.
  • Products travel from the factories by boat instead of by plane Invest in Carbon Offsets.

What is Carbon Offsetting?

Carbon neutrality is achieved by investing in carbon initiatives that equal the amount of carbon a product emits during its production. Purchasing carbon offsets doesn’t give brands a license to be careless with their carbon footprint. We will continue to make thoughtful and deliberate efforts at each level of production to ensure we are limiting carbon emissions wherever possible.

Investing in Wind Energy to Offset Our Carbon Footprint

Carbon offsetting gets a lot of flak, and for good reason! Most brands opt to plant trees to offset their carbon emissions. The flaw we saw in this method is that trees take up to 25 years to reach a size where they can actively offset carbon, while our climate crisis is happening right now. With the help of our friends at Eco Cart, we were able to choose from a range of Gold Standard verified and UN Development Goal centered projects that are actively reducing carbon emissions.

We have chosen to support the Sidrap Wind Farm which is located in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Supporting this wind farm reduces air pollution by replacing coal and other fossil fuel sources of power with clean, renewable energy. The wind farm consists of 30 wind turbines, creates 35 jobs, and has a total installed capacity of 75 megawatts (MW) that is able to produce 253,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy per year for the national powergrid—that’s the equivalent of powering over 70,000 local homes! In our first quarter, our contribution has been to power 12 of those homes.

OUR Q3 2021 CARBON FOOTPRINT

We have taken a weighted estimate of all our orders and are making a mass contribution retroactively. This quarter we produced and offset 15409.72 kg CO2 or 15.40972 metric tons. Starting this next quarter, orders will be calculated and offset live. What's great about this, is we will be able to instantly tell you what your impact was and how much carbon you have helped offset.

If the average, non-biodegradable, and non-organic cotton pad had come off of our supply chain, they would have emitted 19705.52 kg CO2 on average, meaning that August saved 4295.28 kg CO2 this quarter. We estimate that our products reduce emissions by 21.8%.

Our Sustainability Goals for 2023

  • To have our products be 100% traceable across all levels of production.
  • To improve the sustainability of our tampon applicators.
  • To reduce our packaging by using data on how our August customers are customizing orders.
  • To continue to innovate in the period care space by offering even more sustainable options.
  • To reduce emissions by focusing more on localized delivery, sourcing materials from locations closer to our suppliers, and shipping less frequently in larger quantities.
  • To continue to offset our carbon footprint by powering homes in Indonesia with wind power.
